More than $2.6 million from Goodyear to the victim’s family.

Goodyear is being sued $2.1 million over a car accident that took place when a 20-year-old driver, Travis Kirby, skidded off the road, rolled over and struck two trees.

The teenager was driving up to 112 mph with a blood alcohol content more than triple the legal limit (Mr. Kirby’s blood alcohol content was .25, whereas the legal limit in Mississippi is .08.) and allegedly were not wearing seat belts when the car skidded off the road.

The defendants were also able to prove that the tires installed by the dealership were the correct size and acceptable speed rating for Mr. Kirby’s car.

However, the appeals court ruled April 21 that Goodyear and Big 10 Tires & Accessories, a Hattiesburg, Miss., tire store, were at least partly to blame in the August 2000 crash in Copiah County, Mississippi. This is because Goodyear failed to comply with an express warranty: the right rear tire came apart at 92 mph after 10,000 miles, whereas the tire had a 50,000-mile warranty and was speed-rated at up to 112 mph.

$850,000 Awarded to Worker Who Fell Off A Ladder

A construction worker from Howells achieved a successful settlement in February, for serious injuries he suffered when the ladder that he was standing on collapsed, causing him to fall approximately ten feet. As a result of the fall, the worker suffered serious injuries to his wrist and knees, requiring three surgeries.

£365,000 Awarded to Car Accident Victim

A man who was seriously injured when he was crushed between a North London school bus and another vehicle has been awarded £365,000 in damages in an out of court settlement.

John Lewis, aged 32, a teaching assistant, was crushed when the school bus reversed into him, trapping him between the bus and another car, resulting in Mr Lewis suffering multiple fractures to his pelvis.

Almost £500,000 in Compensation for Asbestos Related Disease

Almost £500,000 has been paid in compensation to two widows whose husbands died from the asbestos related disease mesothemlioma, after being exposed to the substance whilst teaching in a school.

And with the increasing public awareness of the dangers of asbestos, the number of accident claims filed by teachers is expected to soar in regards to exposure to the deadly substance.

Last month, the Daily Mirror found that nine out of 10 schools contain asbestos.

Over a dozen councils admitted that out of 3,286 of their schools, 2,917 had been built using asbestos.

Because asbestos-related illnesses take between 15 to 60 years to develop it is impossible to know how many will become ill or die as a result of exposure.

Woman Burnt From Hot Water in the Shower Receives £35k in Compensation

A woman from Birmingham has received £35,000 in compensation, after she was severely scalded while on holiday.

A few days into the holiday, while she was taking a shower, she turned off the 'cold' tap and was scalded by extremely hot water.

The taps were not labelled to indicate whether they were hot or cold. She tried to turn off the hot water but was in such unbearable pain that in so doing she slipped and fell, landing on her side and leaving her exposed to the scalding water.

She was taken to hospital with burns to her body from the waist down. She was treated for shock, put on a drip because of her dehydration and given strong pain killers to help with the extreme pain she was in. She also underwent surgery to have skin grafts on her waist to replace the skin that was burned away.

Trainee Electrician Receives £17,750 After Work Accident

A trainee electrician who suffered from burns to his hands and face has received £17,750 in compensation.

Steven Roberts, who had been training as an electrician, had been repairing wires at the quarry when because of a faulty piece of equipment there was an explosion that caused him serious personal injuries.

The jury awarded $2.3 million in punitive damages to the family of 4-year-old Jonathan “Yoni” Gottesman, who drowned in 2005 while attending a summer camp at the Cathedral Oaks Athletic Club.

Yoni barely passed a swim test earlier that morning, and the instructor determined that the boy should remain in the shallow end of the pool, court documents show. But according to the lawsuit, this information did not reach camp counselors and the boy drowned near the middle of the pool while two lifeguards, three camp counselors and a swim instructor were on duty.

$40 million Lawsuit Settlement for Woman against Ford

A Lamar County woman who said a transmission defect in her Ford Explorer caused an accident that led to her paralysis was awarded $40 million in damages.

The vicitim, who was 23 at the time of the November 2005 accident, claimed said she got out of the Explorer to mail a package and the vehicle ran over her, fracturing her spine.

The verdict comes as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into consumer complaints that some Ford Explorers manufactured in model years 2002 through 2005 unexpectedly shift from out of park into gear.

Ms. Perdue (63) was driving a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder at the time she was struck by a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon traveling between 45 and 50 mph.

The car manufacturer was to blame for injuries she sustained in an accident. As a result of the accident Ms. Perdue suffered fractures to her right tibia, right fibula, and both ankles and incurred medical expenses of $130,000 because of her injuries.

In her lawsuit, Ms. Perdue alleged that Nissan Pathfinder models manufactured between 1987 and 1995 were defective in that they did not protect the lower legs in frontal offset impacts.

Six years after her husband was killed while operating a forklift at the Prime Tanning plant, a Sanford woman has received a $1.9 million settlement from the machine's manufacturer.

Thomas Brown, 48, was killed Aug. 1, 2003, when he was backing up the forklift and hit a shelving rack. The impact knocked his feet off the pedals, automatically engaging the emergency brake. He became pinned in a 5 1⁄2-inch space between the shelf and the dashboard of the forklift, and died of asphyxiation in roughly four minutes.
